- I am beta testing Pacific Bell's new Internet service and was cruising
- usenet:comp.dcom.modems since I work at a small modem company in
- California.
-
- Anyway, I read your problem and it is easy to figure out. You can tell
- if it is a modem slow down or a server slow down by looking at the
- modems RXD LED (I hope your modem is an external one). The RXD LED is on
- when data is being sent from the modem to your computer. If the RXD LED
- is out for longer and longer periods it would mean you are getting less
- and less data for that period of time. If that is the case with your
- situation then it is not a modem problem but a server problem or perhaps
- a memory problem in your computer but not a modem problem. If the RXD
- LED is out more and more frequently as I suspect, you must investigate
- why this is the case. Does your computer have your modem in a flow
- control condition?? Check the RTS LED if are using hardware flow
- control, is it out then the answer is yes and the problem is in your
- computer. If the answer is no then look at the acknowledgement packets
- your computer is sending after getting a packet of data from the sever.
- You can see the ACK packets as a blip on the TXD LED. Is there a longer
- and longer delay between a ON RXD LED and a short ON TXD LED? If the
- answer is yes then your computer is getting slower in acknowledging the
- servers packets of data.
-
- It is true if errors were occuring on the telephone line that it would
- take the answer side modem time to resend corrupted data to your modem
- and hence the RXD LED would be out. But the fact that the data continues
- to get predicatably slower it doesn't smell like a bad line problem.
- However, you can eleiminate the possibility of bad lines and error
- control being a problem if you slow down the LINK speed for test purposes
- to say 9600. Remember slowing down the link to 9600 is not the same as
- changing the speed in Mosaic rather it would be a S register setting or
- AT command in the modem.
-
- Let me know what you find and I'll think about it some more. Best
- regards.
